THE HISTORY OF OUR BAPTIST CHURCH
On June 19th, 1825, a small group gathered under a tree along the Santa Fe Trail, forming the Six Mile Baptist Church. Named for its location within a six-mile protection zone around Fort Osage, the church soon built a log structure and welcomed Bob Powell as its first pastor. With pioneer preacher Jeremiah Farmer riding horseback to lead services, Six Mile Baptist Church's early years were filled with perseverance, community, and a steadfast commitment to faith that continues to guide us today.
In 1835, Six Mile Baptist Church hosted the Blue River Association, marking a significant milestone in its history. With a membership of 29 and a nine-year legacy, Reverend White delivered a powerful teaching from II Timothy, urging the congregation to "study to show thyself approved." This gathering affirmed Six Mile's growing role as a spiritual leader in the region and set the stage for its continued dedication to missions and community service.
Around 1839, a rift formed within Baptist churches over the issue of supporting missions. Six Mile Baptist Church took a bold stand, choosing to back mission efforts locally and abroad. They contributed to help other churches, feed starving Indigenous communities, and support overseas missions. This decision solidified Six Mile's commitment to spreading God's word and helping those in need, a tradition that continues to this day.
In 1859, a new church building was constructed on land donated by James Chiles. This rectangular structure, with separate doors for men and women, was a symbol of growth and resilience. Though the Civil War would bring difficult times, the congregation persevered. Today, our church still stands on this historic site, a testament to the faith and dedication that have sustained us through generations.
A new frame church was built in 1904, marking a significant step forward for SIx Mile Baptist Church. Under the leadership of Pastor L.F. Barger, this building served as a spiritual home until a smallpox outbreak in 1906 temporarily closed its doors. Through adversity, the congregation remained strong, continuing to gather and worship when it was safe to do so, showing the enduring faith of the church community.
In 1934, SIx Mile Baptist Church expanded by adding a basement, creating more space for Sunday school and fellowship. This new area allowed the congregation to host community dinners and programs, deepening their commitment to spiritual growth and fellowship. A Vacation Bible School was also started in 1945 and has continued every year since, providing generations of children with the foundation of faith.
On January 18, 1971, tragedy struck SIx Mile Baptist Church when a fire destroyed both the sanctuary and educational building. Undeterred, the congregation came together, holding services at local schools and churches until a new building was completed. Under Pastor Harry Moore's direction, Six Mile rebuilt and rededicated their church the same year, exemplifying the fortitude and cohesion of a faith-based community.
On August 9, 1992, Six Mile Baptist Church broke ground on a new two-story addition, enhancing the church’s capacity for worship and education. Named the Willard Building in honor of past pastors and deacons, this expansion marked a new era for the congregation. With more space for classes and fellowship, Six Mile continued to grow, building on its strong foundation of faith and community.
Six Mile Baptist Church owes much to the dedicated pastors, deacons, and members who have served throughout its rich history. From pioneer preachers to faithful interim leaders, each has left an indelible mark on our congregation. We honor their legacy of hard work, devotion, and love for God’s word, and pray that we continue to build on this foundation for the generations to come. May we serve with the same passion and faithfulness as those before us.
The purpose of SIx Mile Baptist Church is to unite believers in worshiping the one and only tiresome and living God. We believe that throughout collective worship, God is glorified on earth. Our church is a place where everyone can grow in their relationship with Christ, strengthening their faith and commitment to living a God-cantered life.
